This may involve challenging some norms: for instance, tech programs might critique the pursuit of AI for AI’s sake (like chasing ever-more sophisticated algorithms without regard to societal need) and instead orient projects around clear social value. Business courses might challenge the growth-at-all-costs narrative and discuss sustainable models (like circular economies, or Doughnut Economics which echoes some Buddhist ideas on ecological ceilings and social foundations).
The concept of “right livelihood” could even be used in career counseling. Instead of solely focusing on landing a high-paying job, advisors might engage students in thinking about careers that align with their values and benefit others. Metrics of success for alumni could expand to include contributions to community or environment, not just salary. Some institutions are beginning to track and promote alumni who start social enterprises or lead CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives, showcasing them as role models.
Finally, Buddhist economics is a reminder of measuring what matters. Education can help shift what we measure in the economy by producing graduates versed in alternative metrics. Imagine future CEOs who insist on reporting their company’s “Gross Human Development” index, or AI developers who integrate wellbeing metrics into their product success criteria. Clair Brown’s work on Buddhist economics even incorporates Amartya Sen’s capability approach, measuring economic success by quality of life, equity, and sustainability. If such ideas take hold, tomorrow’s policymakers and tech leaders (today’s students) could redefine industry standards to prioritize long-term societal health over short-term gains.
In short, higher education in the AI age has a duty not just to feed the economy with skilled workers, but to elevate the economy by empowering ethical, aware, and compassionate agents of change. By blending ancient wisdom with modern knowledge – sending engineers to ethics classes, business students to meditation sessions, and everyone to community projects – universities can strive to produce innovators who carry both acumen and empathy. As a Buddhist economist might say, when people understand the universality of suffering and the futility of unlimited greed, they become more compassionate and wise. Those are precisely the qualities we need guiding AI and society in the decades to come.
Humanity at the Core: Empathy, Purpose, and the Meaning of “Being”
As education becomes increasingly mediated by AI, there is a parallel movement to double down on what makes us irreplaceably human. Philosophers like W. Norris Clarke remind us that a person is not an isolated thinker but a being-in-relation – “all things were ‘substance in relation’ and, for a person, stories are the vehicle for relations,” he observed. This insight has powerful implications for reimagining higher education. In a world of intelligent machines, universities are realizing that their ultimate role is to nurture the qualities of empathy, relationality, and existential purpose that define humanity.
What might this look like in practice? First, expect a stronger emphasis on collaborative learning and community in higher education. The pandemic years taught us the value of social connection in learning – students crave belonging, and learn best when they feel part of a supportive group. With AI handling more transactional interactions, educators are freed to focus on cultivating rich human relationships in their classes. We see more cohort-based models, group projects, peer mentoring, and discussion-based seminars. These are not new ideas, but they gain renewed importance as counterweights to the potential isolation of digital learning. The university becomes not just an information hub, but a community of inquiry and care.
Relationality also means learning through dialogue and story. In the Jesuit tradition of education, there’s the concept of “cura personalis” – care for the whole person – and a practice of reflection and narrative. Modern pedagogy echoes this by incorporating reflective essays, journaling, and even digital storytelling into coursework. For example, medical schools are adding narrative medicine courses so that future doctors learn to truly listen to patients’ stories, not just analyze lab results. Business schools may have students write a reflective piece on their values and life story as part of leadership training. These exercises build empathy and self-awareness. As Clarke suggested, stories allow relation – by sharing personal narratives, students connect with each other at a human level, building the kind of understanding no AI can replicate.

This can be seen in the growth of mission-oriented programs like social innovation fellowships, or simply professors taking a moment in a technical class to discuss real-world implications. In AI-related fields, there’s a surge of interest in ethics, bias, and human-centered design. Students working on, say, a machine learning algorithm are encouraged to think about the end-users, the societal context, and potential unintended effects. This nurtures a habit of always situating one’s work in the broader human story.
Courses in the humanities and arts also see a revival of status in an AI-dominated era. Literature, philosophy, history, and fine arts provide the cultural and ethical context that purely technical training might lack. Some forward-looking tech programs explicitly require humanities credits dealing with human existence. For instance, a course on Existentialism or a seminar on “What is the Good Life?” might be part of an AI degree. Far from being impractical, these subjects arm students with frameworks to contemplate issues of identity, purpose, and ethics – crucial in an age where AI forces us to ask, what are humans uniquely here for? Indeed, as AI handles more tasks, the human job description shifts towards things like mentorship, creativity, and ethical decision-making, all of which benefit from a grounding in humanistic knowledge.
Universities are also incorporating experiential learning that fosters empathy: community service requirements, global study programs, and interdisciplinary projects with social impact (as mentioned earlier). These experiences challenge students to step outside their comfort zones and engage with people from different walks of life. In doing so, students often discover shared humanity and develop a sense of compassion. A computer science major volunteering to teach coding in a low-income school, for example, might gain a more nuanced understanding of the digital divide and feel driven to create more inclusive tech after graduation. Such transformation is hard to achieve through textbooks alone; it comes from human-to-human engagement.
Another angle is the cultivation of character and virtues. Terms that might sound old-fashioned, like wisdom, courage, or humility, are finding their way into educational discourse again. Some programs now have workshops on growth mindset, resilience, or ethical leadership. The idea is that producing excellent engineers or lawyers is not enough – they should also be good citizens and good people. AI might score high on IQ, but it has no EQ or moral intuition; those remain our domain. As such, schools are places to exercise the muscles of kindness, integrity, and civic responsibility. Honor codes and ethical pledges are getting renewed attention as well (for instance, students agreeing on responsible use of AI tools and not misrepresenting AI-generated work as their own – essentially a new kind of academic integrity for the AI age).
From a metaphysical standpoint, Norris Clarke’s personalist philosophy suggests that being is inherently relational – we become fully ourselves not in isolation but in relation to others and the world. Translated to education, this means learning is not merely an individual achievement but a relational process. Think of the best college memories: late-night debates in dorms, bonding with teammates in a lab, the mentor who took a genuine interest in your growth. These relational moments often shape us more than any exam. By intentionally creating space for these encounters (through mentorship programs, learning communities, discussion circles), universities reinforce that learning is a profoundly human endeavor. The presence of AI, ironically, can highlight this truth: if a student can get automated feedback from a machine, the feedback from a caring professor or peer stands out as uniquely meaningful.
Finally, existential purpose comes to the fore in an age of AI anxiety. Many students are asking, “What will my role be if machines can do so much?” Higher education can help students explore this not in a despairing way but as a journey of self-discovery. It can impart the confidence that humans have something special – whether it’s imagination, moral courage, or the capacity to dream – that makes us not just relevant but essential. Some universities have started offering “Future of Work” seminars that are essentially philosophical explorations of humanity’s place alongside AI. By grappling with these topics within an academic setting, students gain a sense of agency over the narrative of technology rather than feeling like passive subjects of it.
In essence, the universities that thrive in the AI era will be those that put humanity at the core of their mission. They will use AI to augment learning, but ensure that the most important outcomes are humanistic: empathy, connection, wisdom, and purpose. As one education thinker nicely summed up, “Ensuring human creativity is allowed to flourish both for teachers and learners within this brave new AI-driven world is key to producing the problem solvers of the future”. We might add: it’s also key to producing fulfilled, enlightened individuals who know why they are solving those problems. Higher education, at its best, becomes a guided quest for meaning in a time of machines.
Back to the Future: Reviving the Classical Liberal Arts in a Tech Age
Amidst all this innovation, there is a striking resurgence of something very ancient: the classical liberal arts education, epitomized by the trivium (grammar, logic, rhetoric) and quadrivium (arithmetic, geometry, music, astronomy). In our hyper-modern, technocentric age, one might expect these medieval frameworks to be obsolete. Yet, educators are finding renewed value in the classical emphasis on broad intellectual formation and virtue development as a counterbalance to narrow technical training. The future of higher education might, somewhat paradoxically, involve reclaiming wisdom from the past to humanize the future.
Why look to the trivium and quadrivium now? Consider what skills the modern world needs. Beyond coding or financial modeling, we desperately need critical thinking (logic), clear communication (rhetoric), and the ability to learn from text (grammar) – the very pillars of the trivium. These help us navigate misinformation, articulate arguments, and understand complex ideas, which is essential in a time when AI can generate misleadingly human-like content at scale. The quadrivium’s domains might seem archaic, but they represent a study of the natural order and abstract reasoning: arithmetic and geometry teach quantitative reasoning, music (in the classical sense) teaches proportion and harmony, and astronomy teaches scientific observation of the cosmos. In modern guise, these could translate to data literacy, mathematical modeling, understanding complex systems, and scientific literacy – all crucial skills. As one commentator puts it, “The Trivium provides a structure that has been used for thousands of years for critical thinking and the Quadrivium provides a mental framework to learn about the interconnectedness of life.” A student trained in this full suite is indeed a well-rounded thinker.
There’s also the matter of character formation. The classical liberal arts were never just about information; they were about shaping virtuous, free individuals (hence “liberal” arts, from libertas, freedom). In an era of AI, where technical skills might be easily acquired or even performed by machines, it’s the intangibles – creativity, ethics, adaptability, wisdom – that will set individuals apart and guide societies. Classical education often involved studying great texts, engaging in debate, and reflecting on moral lessons from history and literature. Many honors programs and liberal arts colleges continue this tradition, but now even larger universities are infusing some classical elements into their general education. We see, for instance, core curricula that require courses in classic literature or philosophy for all students, regardless of major, to ensure a common foundation in humanistic thought.
There’s growing interest in Socratic dialogue and rhetoric as teachable skills. Engineering students are being taught how to craft a persuasive argument and present their ideas – essentially rhetoric – recognizing that the best idea means little if it can’t be communicated. Similarly, logic (both formal and informal) is making a comeback as a foundational course to help students with reasoning and programming alike. Some universities have created “Logic across the curriculum” initiatives, given its relevance to fields from philosophy to computer science. Grammar, in the broader sense of structured understanding of language, underpins coding as well (coding has been called the new literacy). It’s fascinating to see how the trivium maps onto digital age literacies: grammar->coding and syntax, logic->algorithmic thinking, rhetoric->user interface and communication of results. This doesn’t diminish the classical; rather, it elevates the modern skills by giving them a classical backbone.
Meanwhile, the quadrivium’s spirit lives on in promoting scientific and numerical literacy for all students. Many liberal arts programs now ensure that even humanities majors do some coursework in math or data science (the new arithmetic/geometry), and science majors engage with music or art to cultivate right-brain creativity and appreciation of aesthetics. Interdisciplinary programs like cognitive science or environmental studies inherently draw on multiple classical arts – one might say an environmental studies student needs astronomy’s observational skill, geometry’s spatial reasoning, rhetoric’s persuasive writing for policy, and so on.
Advocates for classical education argue it’s the best preparation for an uncertain future precisely because it is not tied to specific job skills that may become outdated. Instead, it nurtures an agile, thoughtful mind that can learn new things. A piece from a modern polymath educator said: “In the coming age of AI, the most important skills will be centered on what makes us uniquely human… creativity, risk-taking, empathy, storytelling, purpose, perseverance, relationship-building, leadership, curiosity” (A Polymath Education: Learning Through The Trivium and Quadrivium) – basically a rephrasing of virtues that classical education prized (perhaps minus risk-taking). By encountering the roots of these disciplines, students gain a meta-level understanding of knowledge. Other institutions incorporate great books programs or require study of classical languages (Latin or Greek) not for career utility, but to train the mind and connect with the heritage of ideas.
Interestingly, technology can aid this classical revival. Online platforms can democratize access to classic works (many MOOCs now cover Greek philosophy or Renaissance art), and AI tools can help analyze texts or even simulate historical debates (imagine a chatbot posing as Socrates to engage students). But importantly, the goal isn’t antiquarian. It’s to form “modern polymaths” – individuals who, like Leonardo da Vinci or Ada Lovelace, can traverse art and science with ease. The study of history and rhetoric equips future citizens to spot demagoguery and defend democratic ideals. The study of logic and grammar equips them to navigate the information ecosystem critically. The study of music and geometry, perhaps, instills a sense of beauty and order that can inspire innovation (some of the greatest scientists were also musicians or artists, finding inspiration across domains).
In conclusion, the “classical” and the “futuristic” in higher education are not at odds but deeply complementary. As we reinvent higher ed for the age of AI, we find ourselves drawing on enduring educational philosophies to guide us. The trivium and quadrivium are enjoying a renaissance as educators seek to cultivate well-rounded, virtuous, and wise individuals who can harness technology without losing their humanity. It’s a case of back to the future: returning to first principles (like clear thinking and ethical living) to navigate an era of unprecedented change. In the process, we may finally fulfill the original promise of the university – the formation of whole persons (“universitas” suggesting the whole, the universe of knowledge) – now empowered by modern tools and ancient wisdom in equal measure.

The narrative of a student in this reinvented system might go like this: She enters university and is immediately challenged to think across disciplines and question assumptions. She uses AI tutors for drills, but engages in lively debates and creative projects with peers and professors. Along the way she learns not just facts, but how to learn, how to live responsibly, how to work with others, and how to adapt. She graduates (and perhaps returns repeatedly) with a portfolio of competencies, a network of relationships, and a clear sense of purpose. She is “robot-proof” not because she outran automation in a rat race, but because her education formed her into a flexible, ethical, and curious person – someone who sees AI as a tool to amplify human potential, not a threat.
This compelling vision is already visible in experiments and thought leadership from places like Stanford’s HAI, MIT’s Media Lab, and countless classrooms where dedicated educators and students are innovating daily. It is a vision that marries visionary insight with intellectual depth, much as a great Substack essay or academic discourse should. Reinventing higher education in the age of AI is not a single initiative but a journey, one that calls on us to be as interdisciplinary as Leonardo, as ethical as Ashoka, as inquisitive as Aquinas, and as bold as any innovator. The narrative is still being written – in policy meetings, in ed-tech labs, in faculty lounges, and in online forums. I loved your article. I have a book coming out on May 5 entitled "University Revolution: Artificial Intelligence and the Transformation of Learning". Many of the themes you espouse are part of my book. Thinking about AI in education starts with thinking about how it can leverage and strengthen the educational principles which have defined how education should be. Regrettably these themes have been somewhat corrupted over time. Faculty peers remain committed to the sage on the stage approach to teaching. This approach has never been strong for learning and is especially so for GenZs.
My question to you is this. Do you think universities can adapt fast enough (or at all) to AI. At my university (University of Dayton), when I talk with students, I still hear them saying "my faculty tell me it's cheating" or "I don't know how to use AI" and "I don't know what it means to use AI ethically." No one has advised them to lean into AI for all of their learning and experience.
My fundamental quandary is this - One would have thought educators would have been the first to test use of AI in their education; determine what wasn't working; determine what is working. That has not been the case except perhaps at a few universities worldwide.
